The pressure cooker of Malaysian education is real. The system is exam-centric, a legacy of the British O-Levels and A-Levels.

After lunch, Aisyah attended her Physical Education (PE) class. They played sepak takraw, a traditional Southeast Asian sport that combines elements of volleyball and soccer. Aisyah was a natural at it and enjoyed the exercise and teamwork.

Ramai ibu bapa panik apabila terjumpa chat mesra anak dengan pasangan. Lalu mereka merampas telefon, memarahi di depan orang ramai, atau terus menghubungi guru disiplin. Hasilnya? Anak memberontak dan semakin rapat dengan pasangan (teori reaktansi psikologi).

Sharing a roti canai after recess. Sending folded notes (remember kertas lipat love note ?) with a heart drawn in blue ink. Walking slowly past the other person’s classroom just to accidentally make eye contact.

School life does not end when the bell rings. Malaysian students are required to join at least one uniformed body, one club, and one sports society. Uniformed bodies—such as the Boy Scouts (Pengakap), Girl Guides (Pandu Puteri), Red Crescent (Bulan Sabit Merah), and military cadets (Kadet Polis/Tentera)—are taken very seriously and are massive points of pride.
