The "Gaki" is a Buddhist concept: a hungry ghost with a tiny mouth and a bottomless stomach, eternally unfulfilled. The game extends this metaphor to the village itself. The villagers are also hungry ghosts. Their poverty and fear turn them into monsters. By sacrificing Erumu, they don’t defeat the Gaki—they become it.
