The discourse surrounding the moral status of non-human animals has bifurcated into two dominant, yet often conflicting, paradigms: animal welfare and animal rights. Animal welfare advocates seek to minimize suffering within the existing framework of human use of animals (e.g., farming, research, entertainment). In contrast, animal rights proponents argue for a fundamental abolition of animal exploitation, asserting that animals possess inherent value and rights akin to humans. This paper examines the historical development, core philosophical tenets, practical applications, and ethical tensions between these two positions. It argues that while the rights-based approach offers a logically consistent moral ideal, the welfare model currently provides the most pragmatic pathway for incremental legal and social change. Ultimately, the paper concludes that a synthesis—using rights as a long-term goal and welfare as a short-to-medium-term strategy—may offer the most effective route to improving the lives of animals globally.
