However, historical records are unequivocal: Transgender activists, particularly transgender women of color like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, were on the front lines. Johnson, a self-identified drag queen and trans activist, and Rivera, a transgender rights pioneer, were instrumental in resisting police brutality.
One of the most misunderstood aspects of the transgender community is its relationship to sexuality. A common (and often hostile) question is: “If a trans woman likes women, is she a lesbian?”
