Though he technically calls himself a "preference utilitarian," Peter Singer is the most influential voice in the modern rights movement. His concept of —a prejudice or bias toward the interests of one's own species—is a powerful tool. Singer argues that if we reject racism (discrimination based on race) and sexism (discrimination based on sex), we must also reject speciesism (discrimination based on species). If a dog and a human infant have the same capacity to feel pain, ignoring the dog’s pain simply because it is a dog is morally arbitrary.
