During a hunting party, an accident—or perhaps an assassination attempt orchestrated by his enemies—leads to tragedy. Stroe eventually returns to his ancestral estate. He finds his home ruined and his lands confiscated by the new regime. He has to rebuild his life from scratch, relying on his serfs (răzeși) and his own wits. Note on the ending: In Sadoveanu's vision, the ending is often melancholic. Stroe remains a "haiduc" (outlaw/noble bandit) figure in spirit. The novel concludes with the understanding that while rulers change (Tomșa, Movilă, Radu Mihnea), the true soul of Moldavia resides in its tough, resilient people like Stroe, who are the "Neamul" (The Clan/People).
