Unlike modern SD-card or cloud-based navigation, the RNS-E relies solely on a DVD-ROM drive located behind the front panel. The system reads map data from a dual-layer DVD (DVD+R DL or DVD-R DL). The last official map update released by Audi (via HERE Technologies/Navigation Data) was around 2014-2015 for the original RNS-E (not the plus version).
