Kubrick’s visual language reinforces the theme of blindness versus sight. The film is drenched in Christmas lights, but these warm colors are constantly interrupted by deep, cold shadows. Bill moves through liminal spaces: corridors, staircases, doorways. He is always peering through windows or behind curtains, a voyeur who never fully participates. Mirrors appear constantly, but they reflect only fragments. In one crucial scene, Alice, asleep, laughs in a dream and confesses to having sex with the naval officer. Bill watches her, horrified. Yet the audience realizes Alice is dreaming—she is not being unfaithful, but Bill cannot distinguish between reality and his jealous nightmare. His “open eyes” see only what his fear wants to see.
